Wales/Westpac Ex-PNG/Pacific Staff Reunion

In September 1974, The Bank of New Zealand (20%), BNSW (20%), Bank of Hawaii (20%), and the Government of Tonga (40%) established the Bank of Tonga as a joint venture.

In 1990 the Bank of New Zealand sold half its shares in the Bank of Tonga to Westpac and half to Bank of Hawaii, giving each of them 30%.

The Westpac Bank of Tonga closed down its branches in Ha'apai and 'Eua when it teamed up with the Tonga Development Bank to deliver its banking services to customers in both the outer islands from September 2 2013.Westpac also closed its branches in 'Ohonua and Pangai on Friday, August 30 2013. - News article


On 29 January 2015, Westpac announced that it had entered into an agreement to sell its banking operations to the Bank of South Pacific. This transfer was effected on 10/07/2015.
